Does CalOptima cover therapy?
Most people arrive searching for CalOptima behavioral health or CalOptima mental health and end up at the same question: which therapists can you actually be seen by. Medi-Cal plans include mental health benefits; the part that trips people up is who administers them, because that decides the answer. As a contracted practice, we are one of the CalOptima behavioral health providers open to you.
If you are not sure whether you need a referral or an authorization before booking, ask us and we will find out. You can also call the behavioral health number printed on the back of your CalOptima Health member ID card. Either way it is a short call, and we would rather make it than have you wait on it.
People search for this in a dozen different ways — CalOptima therapists, CalOptima therapy, CalOptima Medi-Cal therapist or Medi-Cal therapist in Orange County — and underneath it is the same question: who can I actually be seen by. The answer here is the same however you phrased it.
This page is about CalOptima Health Medi-Cal. CalOptima Health also runs OneCare and PACE, which are separate programs; if your card says OneCare or PACE, ask us before booking and we will tell you plainly whether we can see you.
What people come to us for
Therapy for anxiety is the most common single reason people call, alongside depression, grief and trauma. Couples see a marriage counselor here, and marriage counseling, couples counseling and premarital counseling all work the same way. Family therapy brings parents and children into the same room. Teenager therapy and counseling teens run at our Beach Boulevard office in Huntington Beach, where an ADHD therapist also works with the part that comes after a diagnosis.
Our therapists work in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT therapy, and EMDR for trauma — if you want an EMDR therapist specifically, say so at intake and we will match you with one. Sessions are weekly to begin with and there is no minimum commitment. We do not carry out psychological testing; if that is what you need we will give you the name of a psychologist who does.
